Declawing Cats May Be Banned In New York State

Although the state vet association fought them tooth and nail, the New York state legislature has passed a ban on declawing cats. Read about what's involved in declawing, why all paws need claws, alternatives to declawing and other states that want vets to keep their paws off cats' claws.

After years of trying, New York is just one paw print away from becoming the first state to ban declawing cats. The state legislature passed the bill on June 4. It's now awaiting Gov. Andrew Cuomo's signature.

Cuomo's office told the New York Times he'll review the measure but wouldn't say whether it will win his paw print of approval.

Manhattan Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal first proposed a ban on declawing cats in 2015. Since then, the state Veterinary Medical Society has been fighting her

proposed legislation tooth and nail.

Cats With Cancer Find Hope From Petco & Blue Buffalo

Are you living with a cat with cancer? Find out how you might be able to get help with vet bills, learn the warning signs of cats with cancer and see how you may be able to reduce your cat's risk.

Blue Buffalo and the Petco Foundation are searching for cures for cancer in cats.

search for cures for cancer in cats.
Cures for cats with cancer are elusive, to say the least. But Blue Buffalo and the Petco Foundation are determined to find the answers.
The two recently announced plans to raise an additional $2.6 million this year to add to the $15 million they've already invested in companion animal cancer research and treatment.

The Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo started the Pet Cancer Awareness Campaign in 2010 with the goals of finding a cure for dogs and cats with cancer, raising awareness of this devastating disease and providing information and financial assistance to people whose animal companions have cancer.

Tiki Cat Introduces Raw Cat Food But There's No Sushi

from retailers later this spring

Tiki Cat raw cat food almost sounds like a fish out of water. The brand cats love for its chunky, chewable seafood is now making raw food. But don't expect sushi. Tiki Cat's new raw cat food is chicken and turkey, not fish.

It's available frozen in eight- and 24-ounce tubs from independent pet supply retailers.

Tiki Cat began in 2005 with a line of mostly fresh caught fish cat food. Tilapia and Wild Salmon were, and still are, favorites at my house. My cats also love the Chicken with Egg.

Flying Into The Future With Insect-Based Cat Food

Black fly larvae cat food may be the next big thing
Cats love eating bugs but will they
love insect-based cat food?
So your cat just caught a fly and ate it. Eeeuuu... But it turns out that cats like the taste of bugs, whether they're on the fly or in insect-based cat food.

Researchers recruited 20 taste testers and offered them food that contained either black soldier fly larvae meal or oil. Ugh...

The cats ate both, although they seemed to like the kind with meal better than the food with oil.

In a world where our cats dine on white meat chicken and fresh caught fish, pouring insect-based cat food into their bowls may seem to fly in the face of convention. But our planet is running out of the resources it needs to feed animals and humans. And if nothing else, insects are plentiful and leave a teeny carbon footprint, if they leave a carbon footprint at all.

Yes Cats Know Their Names | Now There's Proof

Study shows cats know their names, although they may choose to ignore tham.

they may choose to ignore them.
It's official. Our worst suspicions are confirmed. A new study shows cats know their names. So if they don't come when you call, they really are ignoring you.

A team from the University of Tokyo watched 76 cats listen to recorded words that included their names.

Although the cats seemed to tune out most of the human conversation, they all reacted when they heard their names, no matter who was saying them.

But that didn't mean they ran into their loving humans' arms. They showed recognition by moving their heads or ears or twitching their tails

Clean Meat For Cats | A Kinder Way To Feed Our Friends

Clean meat for cats isn't here yet, but it'.s coming
Manufacturers are working
on clean meat for cats.
Talk to your cat about sustainability and clean meat for cats, and he'll probably yawn and go back to sleep. For an animal who loves nothing more than stalking tiny rodents, compassionate eating is pretty much a nonstarter.

But to a growing number of humans, the cruelty involved in the production of our cats' food is becoming a major concern. In an online survey, nearly 600 people said they're interested in feeding their animal companions a plant-based diet, mainly because they're concerned about farm animal welfare.

The only thing that's stopping them is the worry that a diet containing no animal protein will provide inadequate nutrition for their cats and dogs.

An After Hours Vet To Take Your Call When Your Vet's Not There

Guardian Vets provides 24-hour vet service
GuardianVets provides
24-hour vet triage by phone.
It's 3 a.m., and your cat is coughing nonstop. You're beginning to panic. Should you take him to the ER? Can this wait until tomorrow? If only there was an after-hours vet to give you some advice.

Enter GuardianVets, a company that sounds almost like a throwback to the old days, when you could call your vet in the middle of the night and actually get your vet, not a voice mail message. GuardianVets provides an after-hours vet who will talk with you when your vet's office is closed.

The company won the grand prize in Purina's Pet Care Innovation competition at this year's Global Pet Expo.

Health Insurance For Cats | Is It Good News Or Bad News?

Find out whether your health insurance for cats will cover an ER visit

Will your health insurance for cats cover that ER visit?
Accidents happen. Especially in the middle of the night. But now, if your health insurance for cats is with ASPCA or Hartville, you can find out how many high-credit limit cards you have to take with you as you rush your cat off to the ER.

Owned by Crum and Forster Pet Insurance Group, the companies aim to relieve the sticker shock of an ER visit by letting customers know ahead of time whether the cat's procedure will be covered. They also provide an estimate of how much of the bill will be reimbursed. I can see where the answers to those questions could cause even more sticker shock. But isn't that why we have credit cards?

California Attempts To Ban Declawing Cats -- Again

California is considering a bill to ban declawing cats.
There are better ways to protect furniture
than declawing cats.
In the Never Lose Hope Category, California hopes to become the first state in the nation to ban declawing cats. But it has some competition. Bills banning declawing are also under consideration in New York and New Jersey.

While this may seem like a no-brainer to many of us, vets in New York and New Jersey are fighting the proposals tooth and nail.

Running a vet clinic is expensive, after all, and cats can help foot the bill by sacrificing their claws.

Study Shows Today's Cats Are Bigger Than Their Wild Ancestors

Studies show today's cats are bigger than their wild ancestors

Study shows today's cats are bigger than
their wild ancestors were.
Most species, including dogs, get smaller when they become domesticated. But, perhaps due to their sometimes perverse nature, today's cats are bigger than their wild ancestors were.

Why are cats different? No one knows for sure, but experts theorize the reason might be as simple as regular meals.

And it's possible that this applies only to cats in Denmark. That's where researchers had the grisly task of sifting through bags of ancient animal bones looking for some that belonged to cats.

Meet Mousr, The Robotic Cat Toy & Your Cat's New Best Friend

The price may seem a bit steep for another cat toy that's just going to lie around on the floor doing nothing. But hey, isn't your cat worth it? That $149 buys a robotic cat toy with artificial intelligence and its very own app.

Petronics introduced Mousrits smarter-than-most-robotic-cat-toys, at Global Pet Expo last spring and left the event with high honors. It won both the American Pet Product Association's Best New Cat Product Award for 2018 and the Fear Free Best Cat Enrichment Product award.

Cat Friendly Practices: Good For Cats, Good For Vets

Having a cat friendly practice can pay off for vets.
Do you dread taking your cat to the vet? You're not the only one. Your vet might dread that visit as much as you and your cat do. But the American Association of Feline Practitioners is trying to change that with its Cat Friendly Practice program. And, according to a recent AAFP survey, catering to cats doesn't just eliminate the dread. It's good for business.

In the survey, 83 percent of the vets with a Cat Friendly Practice designation reported increased cat visits. And 61 percent said their practice revenue has grown since earning the designation.

Goodbye Drs. Foster And Smith

There will be no more Drs. Foster and Smith catalogs for my cats and I to read
© Hilary Roemer |
Back in the day, my cats and I loved finding a Drs. Foster and Smith catalog in our mailbox.

We thought there was way too much dog stuff, but we always found a few cat items to buy. Our first floor-to-ceiling cat tree came in a huge box from Drs. Foster and Smith.

That was before there was an Internet and online retailers. And more important to Drs. Foster and Smith, it was before there was a giant pet supply company called Petco.

Petco purchased Drs. Foster and Smith in 2015. It will shut the company down this month and move its online services to Petco's website.

Cat Food Trends -- New Ingredients To Look For In 2019

Coming soon to the front of your cat food cans and bags: turmeric, honey and coconut. Think of them as biohacking for cats and the newest cat food trends to look for in 2019.

Biohacking for humans has been around for years, although many of us have never heard of it. The simple definition of biohacking is adding nutrients or more natural foods to your regular diet to improve your health and quality of life.

But like so many human food trends, biohacking is now making its way into the cat food market. Enter turmeric, honey and coconut.

It's New! Amazon's Private Label Cat Food

Amazon's private label cat food went on sale earlier this month.
In its never-ending craving for still more business, Amazon launched a private label cat food brand earlier this month. Wag, Amazon's private label cat food, comes in seven flavors. But based on the reviews so far, cats aren't exactly wagging their tails with joy when they see the cans coming out.

Not that cats ever wag their tails with joy. Amazon began its foray into the private label pet food business with dog food called Wag.

No More Free Rides For Some Emotional Support Animals

The airlines are clipping service animals' wings with tighter rules.
© Okssi -
Was your emotional support animal hoping for a free ride? Unless he's a cat or dog, that's not going to happen on United Airlines. And even cats and dogs will find their wings clipped by tighter rules that went into effect earlier this month.

The flap over emotional support animals apparently began when a woman tried to board a United Flight in Newark with a peacock named Dexter on her shoulders.

Nothing against peacocks, the airline said, but Dexter was way too big to ride in the cabin. He and his human drove to California.

Abused Cats And Dogs Could Get Their Own Lawyers In New Jersey

Proposed legislation will mandate the abused cats and dogs get their own lawyers.
Sadly, we've all heard about awful cases of animal abuse. And often, the abusers get off with minimal or no penalty. But that could change in New Jersey, where Democratic Assembly woman Annette Quijano recently introduced legislation that would help abused cats and dogs get their own lawyers.

The lawyers or advocates would be volunteer attorneys and law students.
